The first Gender Equality Ombudsperson, Mrs. Gordana Lukač-Koritnik was appointed by the Croatian Parliament in July 2003. The Gender Equality Ombudsperson monitors the implementation of the Gender Equality Law effective July 30, 2003 and other regulations concerning gender equality. The Gender Equality Law defines and regulates protection from discrimination on the grounds of sex, as well as equal opportunity mechanisms. Gender equality is one of the fundamental values of the constitutional order of the Republic of Croatia (Article 3 of the Constitution), whose protection is ensured by the Constitution itself (Article 14).
